Hoaxed Photos – It is important that you run witness submitted photos through a program that will reveal the EXIF data of the photo. Figure 5 shows a photo that was manipulated with an image editing tool. In this case, a program called Camera 360 was used.

Figure 6 shows the information that can be obtained using a free program called EXIF Data Viewer. Some programs that show EXIF data also show GPS coordinates. This is another good way to match up where the witness claims the photo was taken and where the GPS coordinates indicate it was taken. Sometimes a case can turn from what seems to be a valid case to a hoax just based on EXIF and GPS data.
