The photo in Figure 9 shows a black dot that the witness believed was an object.

A digital camera has an electronic image sensor that converts light into an electronic signal.
A bright object like the sun can overwhelm the sensor.
If a camera is pointed directly at the sun, or other very bright light, the capacitors may not be able to handle the amount of light and so they fail, leaving a black spot in the photo.
That was the case with the photo in figure 9. There was no black object in the background.
